Founder and CEO of A.C.T. Institute

Sekou Hill

Born and raised in Washington, DC, Sekou Hill’s passion for basketball began at the age of 11, when he first watched the legendary Lakers-Celtics rivalry unfold on television. With few positive role models to guide him, basketball became his escape and inspiration. Determined to understand how elite athletes reached such heights, he embarked on a self-taught journey to master the game, starting with the basics of dribbling. By the following year, his hard work paid off, earning him a spot on his school’s basketball team in 7th grade. This early challenge planted the seed for a lifelong pursuit of maximizing effort and pushing beyond potential.

Sekou’s academic strengths earned him a partial scholarship to attend DeMatha Catholic High School, a powerhouse in the world of basketball. While he never made the team despite trying out, this experience gave him a realistic view of what it takes to compete at the highest levels and instilled a deep respect for the value of hard work, perseverance, and humility. After high school, Sekou entered the healthcare industry, working his way up from the mailroom at Georgetown University Medical Center to a successful 25-year career in Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management. Throughout this time, he earned numerous certifications, proving his ability to thrive in demanding and evolving fields.

Recognizing the growing importance of cybersecurity, Sekou transitioned into this field, once again applying the same drive and determination that had led to his previous successes. This balance between professional achievement and his passion for basketball has been a cornerstone of his life.

The birth of his son in 2003 shifted Sekou’s focus to fatherhood, where he sought to encourage his child’s natural interests while fostering a love for basketball. Drawing from his own experience, Sekou carefully introduced his son to the game, knowing that forcing a child into the sport would hinder rather than help their development. His method worked—by the time his son was 10, he had already surpassed Sekou’s basketball abilities and developed a genuine love for the sport.

As his son grew, Sekou became deeply involved in the basketball community, not just as a father, but as a player development coach, guiding other young athletes. His unique coaching methods, grounded in both technical skills and mental resilience, quickly garnered attention. But, ever the realist, Sekou understood the odds of his son—or any player—making it to the professional level. Academics remained central to his family’s approach, and his son’s balance of basketball excellence and honor roll academics throughout high school is a testament to this philosophy.

Though his son didn’t achieve his dream of playing college basketball, he was accepted into an honors program on an academic scholarship—a powerfulreminder of the importance of life beyond the game. Sekou’s journey eventually led him into basketball officiating, where he became a board-certified referee part-time, gaining yet another perspective on the game.

These experiences culminated in Sekou’s vision for A.C.T. Institute, an organization designed to empower student-athletes to leverage their passion and dedication to basketball into a pathway for success—whether on the court or in other rewarding careers. With A.C.T. Institute, Sekou seeks to provide young athletes with the tools, mentorship, and career training they need to thrive both in sports and in life, ensuring that their hard work translates into a bright and secure future.
